CONCERT MASTER/MELODIAN REVIEW
For this review, we received the
Concert Master software as well as
the Melodian musical keyboard. One
personal note is this: everyone
loved playing with the keyboard. It
is a full three octaves (actually
3 octaves plus 2 keys). It is totally
polyphonic (allows 3 keys to be read
by the program at once).
Concert Master is totally controlled
from the Melodain keyboard (or normal
typing keyboard if you don't have the
Melodian) and the four function keys
on your Commodore-64. All of the
functions in Concert Master are easily
controlled by the function keys.
Such things as volume, tempo, and
octave can easily be changed. As an
added feature, you can turn on a
metronome to help you keep your
rhythm. You can control all three
voices independent of the others.
For example, you can have voices one
and three 'muted' while you 'lay down
the track' for voice two. You can
also listen to any combination of
voices when you are in 'playback'
mode.
When deciding on how you want your
music to sound, you can choose from
20 preprogrammed instruments. Some of
these are: bass, trumpet, harpsichord,
bagpipe, and organ. There are six
different 'modes' that you can assign
to each voice when playing. Among
these are: record, mute, and monitor.
Since all of your music must be
played off a keyboard (either the
Melodian or the C-64), you must know
how to play a piano before you can
make your C-64 sing. This a bit
awkward for those who don't know how.
Another drawback that we found is that
there is no way to edit your music
once you've entered it. The only way
we found is to start all over. A good
idea in this case is to save your
music every so often. When you get
a part of your music coded correctly,
save it!
The Concert Master allows you to
SAVE your music and LOAD it back
later. You are also able to change
all of the ADSR settings for the
voices and choose from a low-pass,
high-pass, or band-pass filter. Along
with the filter, you can set the
cutoff frequency. You can decide upon
which voices to filter. Concert Master
allows ring modulation and
synchronization.
The documentation for Concert Master
is good. All points are covered in
good detail. As an added bonus,
more than one-half of the instruction
booklet is dedicated to musical ideas
and tips.
