  2.    CONCERT MASTER/MELODIAN REVIEW

  6.   For this review, we received the
  7.  
  8. Concert Master software as well as
  9.  
  10. the Melodian musical keyboard.  One
  11.  
  12. personal note is this:  everyone
  13.  
  14. loved playing with the keyboard.  It
  15.  
  16. is a full three octaves (actually
  17.  
  18. 3 octaves plus 2 keys).  It is totally
  19.  
  20. polyphonic (allows 3 keys to be read
  21.  
  22. by the program at once).
  23.  
  24.   Concert Master is totally controlled
  25.  
  26. from the Melodain keyboard (or normal
  27.  
  28. typing keyboard if you don't have the
  29.  
  30. Melodian) and the four function keys
  31.  
  32. on your Commodore-64.  All of the
  33.  
  34. functions in Concert Master are easily
  35.  
  36. controlled by the function keys.
  37.  
  38. Such things as volume, tempo, and
  39.  
  40. octave can easily be changed.  As an
  41.  
  42. added feature, you can turn on a
  43.  
  44. metronome to help you keep your
  45.  
  46. rhythm.  You can control all three
  47.  
  48. voices independent of the others.
  49.  
  50. For example, you can have voices one
  51.  
  52. and three 'muted' while you 'lay down
  53.  
  54. the track' for voice two.  You can
  55.  
  56. also listen to any combination of
  57.  
  58. voices when you are in 'playback'
  59.  
  60. mode.
  61.  
  62.   When deciding on how you want your
  63.  
  64. music to sound, you can choose from
  65.  
  66. 20 preprogrammed instruments.  Some of
  67.  
  68. these are: bass, trumpet, harpsichord,
  69.  
  70. bagpipe, and organ.  There are six
  71.  
  72. different 'modes' that you can assign
  73.  
  74. to each voice when playing.  Among
  75.  
  76. these are: record, mute, and monitor.
  77.  
  78.   Since all of your music must be
  79.  
  80. played off a keyboard (either the
  81.  
  82. Melodian or the C-64), you must know
  83.  
  84. how to play a piano before you can
  85.  
  86. make your C-64 sing.  This a bit
  87.  
  88. awkward for those who don't know how.
  89.  
  90. Another drawback that we found is that
  91.  
  92. there is no way to edit your music
  93.  
  94. once you've entered it.  The only way
  95.  
  96. we found is to start all over.  A good
  97.  
  98. idea in this case is to save your
  99.  
  100. music every so often.  When you get
  101.  
  102. a part of your music coded correctly,
  103.  
  104. save it!
  105.  
  106.   The Concert Master allows you to
  107.  
  108. SAVE your music and LOAD it back
  109.  
  110. later.  You are also able to change
  111.  
  112. all of the ADSR settings for the
  113.  
  114. voices and choose from a low-pass,
  115.  
  116. high-pass, or band-pass filter.  Along
  117.  
  118. with the filter, you can set the
  119.  
  120. cutoff frequency.  You can decide upon
  121.  
  122. which voices to filter. Concert Master
  123.  
  124. allows ring modulation and
  125.  
  126. synchronization.

  132. good detail.  As an added bonus,

  134. more than one-half of the instruction
